At 11.15 a.m. Longstreet sends his assault divisions forward. Wood’s Union division has just moved out of line, thus creating a gap which the attacking Rebels exploit masterfully. By noon, at the end of one of the most successful infantry charges of the war, Johnson and Hindman have penetrated deep into the Union rear. McNair’s brigade in Johnson’s division have captured Mendenhall’s battery and then continue west. Hood’s supporting divisions (movement not shown) have been engaged around the Dyer Field. Wilder’s brigade threaten the Confederate flank, forcing Manigault back in disorder and causing Longstreet to summon Trigg’s brigade from reserve. With the Union right-centre fleeing, Hindman and Johnson now must countermarch to their right to attack Thomas.
